World Doula Week 2025: Favorite Birth Tools

When I arrive on the scene of a laboring mama, the first thing I do is go to work observing. Is the environment what she wanted it to be? What is her emotional state? Where are her support people? Does she have physical needs? Does she have safety needs? How is she coping?
In order to answer these questions, I have to look around, gather information, and process it in order to make the best plan and integrate into that space. My eyes are a key component in this process.
Once I've determined what I need to do next, I go to work using my hands. Maybe I'm refilling a water bottle, turning down the lights, or setting up aroma therapy. Then I use my hands for comfort, reassurance, and assistance as mama labors to bring baby earth side.
Combs, rebozos, balls, heat packs, honey sticks - yes, I have all those too. But I cannot utilize any of these tools without my hands, and the human touch can bring connection and comfort like an inanimate object never can.
My favorite birth tools? My eyes, my hands!
