World Doula Week: Favorite Educational Resources

I've been in the birth world a very long time (since 2004). Every single time, the mother who lacks education comes into the space unprepared and uncertain. What we don't know can hurt us!
Education is a critical component of preparing well for a positive birth experience. Understanding options, how to communicate well with providers, and what the pathway may look like in instances of emergencies can remove the fog of anxiety about the unknown.
In this light, my husband and I created Marathon Birth Training in 2011 and have taught dozens of students the ins and outs of the labor process and how to prepare well mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually for their birth marathon. We discuss race day options, preparation for race day, understanding the race track and making a good plan of action, finishing strong and recovering well. This course is taught over four weeks and provides 10 hours of high quality education and resources for a more prepared birth experience. Obviously, this would rank as a favorite.
When it comes to online resources, I am huge on peer reviewed articles and absolute statistics (rather than the relative statistics that mamas are often fed at their OB offices). Enter Evidence Based Birth - an organization committed to unveiling the truth in so many questionable practices in the world of pregnancy and birth!
Between these two resources, my clients walk away feeling empowered to make the decisions best for themselves and their babies and they understand the process of moving toward a birth that they can be proud of!
